Thumbs Down...

There is a feature called "You Said..." in our Adoptive Families Magazine, that allows readers to express thumbs up or thumbs down to certain things they encounter that either stigmatize or promote adoption. In the most recent edition, there was big thumbs down given to a new Warner Bros. movie. I found this interesting because Bob had brought this very movie up just a few days earlier. Here is the snippet from the magazine:

"Many readers were appalled by the previews for a horror film, Orphan, about a couple who adopts an older girl who "is not what she appears to be." Says Kathleen Chase, "the adoption message is extremely negative. There is actually a line in the trailer that says, ' it must be hard to love an adopted child as much as your own.'" Through phone calls, letters, and a Facebook group, the adoption community expressed concern to Warner Bros. The company responded by changing the previews and marketing campaign for the film. Way to go!"

It is so important to not allow stereotypes to perpetuate!
