Part of our requirements for this process is that we take several classes offered through our agency. They post a list of options each January and it is rather extensive. My constant need for education and overall personal curiosity leads me to want to sign us up for everything but that is neither necessary nor financially reasonable at this point. Some classes are free while others cost $15-20 per couple. Not too bad unless you want to take 8 classes!
Anyway, we've signed up for a class on the 11th that should be kind of fun. It's called "Keepin' that love alive," and who can't use instruction in that department! The whole premise is to teach adoptive parents how to maintain their personal connection and keep their marriage healthy in the face of a demanding new family member. I often hear parents say that their relationship with their spouse takes a serious backseat -- sometimes temporarily and sometimes permanently. To some degree change is inevitable. We have to morph our interactions in order to cope and survive, but the last thing we want is for our marriage to suffer. Afterall, there will come a day when our bundle of joy will move out and it will be the two of us once more. I'd like to think we will have the skills to ensure all transitions are as smooth as possible.
